I provide one-to-one music therapy for elderly patients in their private homes. I use singing, music improvisation, relaxation techniques, and lyric analysis along with other techniques to enhance quality of life for patients of various cultures and backgrounds. One of my favorite techniques I use as a music therapist is song writing. I engage my clients in providing thoughts and ideas, and then together we form lyrics based on those ideas. We use a song that the patient has fond memories of, usually songs from their young adult years.
When I meet a patient and family, I assess the patient’s likeliness of responding to music for therapeutic purposes. If the patient and family are receptive to the music, we discuss music preferences, and a plan of care. As a member of the Certification Board of Music Therapists (CBMT), I follow the standards and ethics set by the board.
