Guest Post: “A Garden of Purses”
I was reminded of the trend of kids finding special things to do while in their grandparents’ house when I read my friend, Faigie Horowitz’s delightful poem about her grandchildren exploring her various possessions and accessories in her closet.
This resonated with me because of a recent encounter with my own family.
After a casual pizza dinner eaten outside on our patio last night, one of my toddler grandsons played with his favorite Fisher Price doggie pull-toy. As he pushed and pulled it around the backyard, I asked his Mommy if maybe he could take it home. After all, he seemed to enjoy it so much.
“Absolutely not,” was her swift reply. As I should have known, she wants the child to have special stuff to play with at their Omi’s house. And I totally respect that. Some things are just special treasures for Grandma’s house memories. Ditto for the number puzzle (seen in the background of doggie photo above!) that my pre-school grandson considers his special toy for when he visits me.
Whether it be kids rummaging through their Grandma’s closets, playing in the backyard in their Bubby’s house, or pushing a pull-toy in their Oma’s backyard, their experiences are always special and memorable.

We have some of the kids’ art still framed on the walls. I’m emptying the safe deposit box today to give kids stuff I don’t need and they might– their birth certificates, ss# cards, stocks, etc. I’ve saved a few of their notebooks– they don’t want them but I enjoy reading them now and then and can show to the grands. Yes, it’s good to have some special toys at grandma’s house– and activities and foods they don’t always get at home. (ice cream sandwiches.)
