Blogging Bubby Buddies
Since I began this blog over one year ago, I have made many new friends who are in the same life boat as I am. These are self-described young and energetic grandmothers who have a passion for writing and sharing our joy (and oys) of this interesting (for lack of a better adjective) life phase.
Cycling Grandma, Life in the 50’s and Beyond , Lexie’s Nana, and Coastal Mom are just a few of my Blogging Bubby Buddies or perhaps Empty Nesters without the Grandmother piece. (Bubby means grandmother for those readers who may have forgotten!).
I can only imagine that there are many more Blogging Grandmothers out in the Blogosphere whom I have not had the pleasure of “meeting” yet. I look forward to reading their blogs too.
These kindred spirits write material that hits home and is close to my heart. We comment on each others’ blogs and learn from one another.
I’ve learned is that this is the best stage to enrich our relationships with our significant others – meaning our spouses or other family members that are not our children. Yes, we enjoy our relationships with our grandchildren, but we cannot let that define us. (Funny how this blogger who is totally obsessed with grandmother-hood is saying not to let that define us, but be that as it may…).
Scrabble, movies, videos, dinner out, reading books, cycling (a la Cycling Grandma!) are just some of the activities that we grandmothers – whether we blog about it or not – can occupy ourselves with together with our spouses during this time.
How do you occupy yourselves now that your grown kids are out of the house? Share some of that below.

Thanks for the shout out! I also knit and have found a group of women knitters who try to meet once a week. Please check out my mother’s blog (I helped her get started)– http://bestofbarbara.wordpress.com/– a great activity to keep an 83 year old mind active!

Wow – Lisa, your mom and my mom are the same age! Till 120 – we have that in common as well. I checked out your mother’s blog! How cool!! Very impressive. And knitting is a great hobby – my mother knits, crochets and sews but I never learned to do that… oh well. Maybe some day!

Wow, Mazel Tov that it’s been a year!! I enjoy reading your blog a lot! You should have the strength to write until you’re 120!!!
It’s hard to think of different things my husband and I like to do together. They’re pretty standard-you know, we go out to eat, an occasional movie or show, take walks, go on trips, go to the store together (now that’s a fun one!! lol!). It’s all the simple things and pleasures of life that I think we both try to be grateful for and appreciate-and in fact, deem as precious gifts-especially our good health and attitudes. It’s so easy to get stuck in the past or get depressed about the future-we try, we really do, to stay in the present and acknowledge the good from Above, from our families: our parents , from our children (who are our responsibilities still, even though they’re out of the house!),and from our precious special good friends, old and new. It’s that awareness that our lives are really precious and we are always trying to be grateful for them that make our coming together fun and light! We always look for the light stuff together, try to find things to laugh about, and be happy each day about. We look for the sun!! That’s what we do, I guess!
Again, CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU-keep up the writing and all of the ideas and encouragement for all of us (bubbies/nanas, grandmas, poppas, zaidys, gramps too!) as we (slowly) age-Listen, the alternative is that we DON’T age, G-d forbid!- so we might as well do so with huge SMILES on our faces and a steady gait….slower, but not crawling- NOOOOOOO!- just not running like a chicken with its head cut off everywhere we go!!! Let’s all be smart, thoughtful chickens, right?! Right!
