Freedom: Not Just From Physical Work
As Passover approaches and “spring break” is upon us, I have several thoughts about freedom from work. Passover is typically the holiday that we celebrate and recount the freedom of the Jewish people from the bondage of Pharoh in Egypt. Pharoh’s heart kept hardening after all the pleas from Moses to free the Jewish people, and finally after the 10 plagues, Pharoh said, “okay, okay, go already!”
And they left Egypt, the sea split and the crossed into freedom.
For us, this is real. This is our history; this is our sign from Above that G-d takes care of us till today. He took us out of Egypt back then and He continues to take care of us.
But wait, we aren’t in Egypt, are we? What kind of freedom is that if we aren’t in real slavery?
Well, yes we are. We each have our own personal and emotional baggage, bondage and feelings of slavery. To what in our lives are we enslaved? Is it our blackberries? Is it our blogs?
Is it our technology?
Is it our materialism? Is it our pettiness? Our envy? Our ….and you fill in the blanks.
From those things too, we celebrate our freedom. During Passover, we reflect on past miracles and project future miracles within ourselves and within our fellow people.
Let’s all have a wonderful break from emotional slavery, whether or not you celebrate Passover.
